Tongan Language week 2023 - Seini and Sitaleki Tonga
We're continuing the Tongan language week celebrations with our staff profiles. Today we see the familiar faces of our mental health nurse, Seini Falefata and her younger brother Sitaleki Tonga who is one of our navigators, share what it means for them to be Tongan.

What does it mean for you and your family to be Tongan?

Seini - It means that everything we do is the Tongan and the Christian way. The way we live which is as a collective, our food, how we dress, knowing our status, roles and responsibilities in our family and community, that our language is passed on to our children which is getting more difficult and that we look after our home and families back in Tonga.

Sitaleki -  We are blessed with the last name Tonga and carry it proudly. To be Tongan is to be of service and expect nothing in return, except for some laughs and memories

Where are you from in Tonga?

We hail from Ha'atafu, Kolovai (paternal side) and Vaini, Ma'ufanga (maternal)

What is your favourite Tongan tradition or unique Tongan proverb that is dear to you and your family?

Seini - Ko e koloa ‘a tongá ko e fakamālō – The expression of gratitude is the treasure of Tonga.

Sitaleki - My favourite proverb, “Koe koloa a Tonga Koe fakamalo” which loosely translates to “The expression of gratitude is the treasure of Tonga”.

To express gratitude doesn’t only mean words, but actions as well. Gratitude is so beautiful;  it strengthens existing relationships and sprouts new relationships, In a way expression of gratitude relates back to all 4 pillars of Tongan values, (Faka’apa’apa /Respect, Tauhi Va/ Keeping Warm Relationships, Loto To / Humility and Mamahi’I Mea / Loyalty).

How does this year's theme for Tongan Language week apply to you?

Seini -  The first learning place for us as Tongans is outlined by the theme. Our traditional practises and language is lived, practised and normalised at home, at church and in our family gatherings to provide a solid foundation of their identity.

What would you like to see for the Tongan community in the next year?

Seini - Our Tongan community in Canterbury to come together and work collaboratively with Pasifika services to support the Tongan living in the canterbury region to live prosperous lives.

Sitaleki - I would love to see a program based around immigration. Immigration is a topic that families don’t like to talk about, but it doesn’t mean there isn’t a need. If we could have a program held every year where an immigration advisor could have a group talanoa with our families around immigration than that would make huge positive impacts. In this Talanoa they could explain the different visas applicable to Tongans, as well as cover a family’s pathway to residency. No doubt it would be a hard journey but I know it would be worth it.
