Phillip is one of our health coaches who has been serving with Etu Pasifika Canterbury (EPC) for a while now. You may recognise him from our Men's health week participants and Movember. Phil also enjoys bringing humor to our team and enjoys keeping active.

What does it mean to you to be Samoan?

Selau Pasege 685 !! Because it has set great foundational values for me to live my life  

 

What Villages do you hail from?  

Leauva’a, Tuana’i 

 

How do you keep your culture and language alive here in NZ? 

Through church, and at home being able to speak and comprehend the language 

 

What is a Samoan quote or proverb that you admire? 

“O le ala le pule o le tautua” – Path to leadership is through service 

 

What is your favourite Samoan food? 

Kopai, falai maukegi LOL 

 

Has there ever been a time in your life where you struggled with your identity as a Samoan living in NZ?  

Nah im pretty confident in myself as a Samoan!

 

What is your advice for the up-and-coming NZ born Samoan generations?  

If you want to learn how to speak. Hangout with samoan speaking people and tell them to talk to you in Samoan as much as possible. Don’t be shy about trying to speak Samoan even when they laugh at you. We truly appreciate and admire those that try to speak our language 

 

What do you love about the Samoa and its culture? 

How much our culture values God and placing God first in all that we do. Also, how being respectful is drilled into us at a young age.
