Foa is a part of our host and administration team, she has joined us recently and is a valuable member of the team here at Etu Pasifika Canterbury (EPC). She brings great organisation skills, a warm personality and loving nature to the team.

What does it mean to you to be Samoan?

I am very proud to be Samoan…well sometimes but I love our culture, people and absolutely love our food.

What Villages do you hail from?

I’m first generation NZ born in my family, my parents were born and raised in Samoa and their villages are my villages. Mum is from Saleaumua and my dad is from Vavau

How do you keep your culture and language alive here in New Zealand?

If I am being honest, I am keeping it alive in the food my ancestors have created. I was taught how to make all the main traditional cuisine and I love cooking it for my family.

What is a Samoan quote or proverb that you admire?

O le ala I le pule o le tautua = pathway of a leader is through service…or something like that lol my grandpa would say it in his matai speeches when I was young. I later understood the meaning and it humbled me as the oldest of 5 and keep it close.

What is your favourite Samoan food?

Fa’alifu Fa’i and falai mamoe

Has there ever been a time in your life where you struggled with your identity as a Samoan living in NZ?

When I was at school and when I started working. My first few months at a job was intimidating because I am a Samoan female, Etu Canterbury was the first time ever I felt seen.

What is your advice for the up-and-coming NZ born Samoan generations?

Give yourself space and time to create your journey as a Samoan, be kind to yourself (WELLA add – because your worth it! ).

What do you love about Samoa and its culture?

Just like all nations it’s our beautiful people, always smiling. I also love that we teach the importance of respect at a very young age.
