Prioritising wellbeing at the start of the year to reduce likelihood of burnout later
Almost two weeks into the new year, we continue to highlight the importance of keeping healthy, both physically and mentally.

Mental health nurse, Seini Falefata, says that prioritising wellbeing at the beginning of the year is important for reducing the likelihood of burnout as the year progresses. She shares some of her tips to help people look after their wellbeing in 2026.

Q: Why is it important to look after our wellbeing, especially as we enter a new year?

Burnout is a gradual process that develops over time. Setting ambitious goals and high expectations without adequate self-care can increase pressure and lead to neglect of personal wellbeing in the pursuit of achievement.

Prioritising wellbeing at the start of the year helps you build resilience, recover from past stress, and approach new goals in a way that’s healthy, balanced, and sustainable, reducing the likelihood of burnout as the year progresses.

Q: What are some tips you can share to help people look after their wellbeing?

  1. Recharge before you push forward - Let go of last year’s stress and fatigue. Don’t carry it forward. Make space for fresh energy and opportunities.

  2. Prioritise the basics - Sleep, rest, healthy boundaries, building relationships and emotional wellbeing early in the year can stop burnout before it becomes severe.

  3. Remember: Wellbeing fuels motivation - Burnout drains energy and lowers performance. Looking after yourself helps you stay consistent and achieve your goals.

  4. Mind and body work together - Prolonged stress affects focus, immunity, and mood. Protecting your wellbeing reduces these risks and helps you function at your best.

  5. Set healthy boundaries - Start the year with realistic expectations, balance, and time for family and rest to prevent overwork and emotional exhaustion.

  6. Seek help if you are experiencing early symptoms of burnout.
