Personal tragedy pushes Norbert Muller towards medical profession
Malo e lelei, my name is Norbert Muller, a final year medical student at the University of Otago, Ōtautahi. I’m a Tongan born 23-year-old aspiring doctor, brought up in Ōtautahi by my single mother and with four siblings.

My medical aspirations stem from the unfortunate passing of my older brother, Motekiai, at the young age of 26 at Vaiola Hospital in Tonga. This was a key driver in motivating me to provide the best healthcare service for my fellow people so families will not have to deal with the same pain my family have faced.

I have been working part time at Etu Pasifika Canterbury since my second year of university and I have seen the cry for help from our people. These struggles are what drives my passion for medicine, because without medicine, people would not be able to live fully, especially with our current health statistics.

Ōtautahi has been an awesome place to learn medicine with many key illnesses prevalent here. There is a growing Pasifika population in Ōtautahi but not enough Pasifika clinicians to share the load.

Coming from the humble beginnings of Linwood in Christchurch, I hope that my journey will inspire our young Pasifika leaders to step up and make a difference.
