Men's Health Week 2023: Dr Sam Ah Mu
GP Fellow at Etu Pasifika Canterbury, Dr Sam Ah Mu, shares his thoughts, feelings, tips and tricks about health and what that looks like for him - even sharing what his go-to breakfast choice is! Through his role, he is able to support his patients with their health and wellbeing. Dr Ah Mu kicks off the first of our profiles for Men's Health Week 2023.

This week is Men’s Health Week – why do you think it’s important to talk about men’s health? 

I think it is important we talk about men’s health to help men be more comfortable discussing their physical, mental and social concerns to maintain their wellbeing. 

Why is health and well-being important to you? 

Health and well-being is important to me so I can stay as well as possible for my family. I want to see my children grow, be able see them succeed and be there for them when they need. 

What do you do to keep yourself healthy? 

I love to play sport! I enjoy volleyball, basketball and touch rugby. I do CrossFit every day to try stay fit for when I can play sport. 

What’s your go-to meal? 

Eggs for breakfast is my favourite. Poached, scrambled, fried – You name it! 

Your favourite proverb/mantra/quote/song that keeps you feeling positive? 

Don’t worry be happy – Bob Marley 

What’s your favourite physical wellness activity? 

Any form of exercise – breathing helps with both physical health and mental health. It is the best antidepressant! 

What’s one wellness tip or piece of advice you can share to encourage others this week? 

Keep moving, sleep, eat well and spend time with the people you love.
