My name is Orepa Tiatia, I am full Samoan, born and raised in Samoa for 13years. My villages are Lalomanu, Ulutogia and Tufulele. I have been working at Etu Pasifika as an Enrolled nurse for just over a year.
What/who inspired you to take up nursing?
My mother has always been a tremendous influence in my life. From a young age, I saw her dedicate herself to caring for others, whether within our families or simply through her everyday actions within our community.
What is the best thing about being a nurse?
The best thing about becoming a nurse is the relationships that you build with your patients and families. This connection can be deeply rewarding, as nurses not only help treat physical ailments but also provide comfort and reassurance during stressful times.
How does your language/culture help you in your profession?
Working as a nurse at Etu Pasifika has open opportunities for me to utilise my language and culture to engage with patients and families. It has helped me to understand different perspectives and avoiding cultural misunderstandings while also developing that trust with them.
What words of encouragement do you have for anyone who is wanting to become a nurse?
Nursing can be demanding, but it is also incredibly rewarding. Stay committed to your education and training. The journey might seem long and challenging at times, but every step you take is preparing you to be the best nurse you can be.
