Fiji Language Week 2023 - Mona Jackson
Mona Jackson is one of our hosts here at Etu Pasifika Canterbury, and she does everything graciously and with a smile on her face always. We asked her a few questions for Fiji Language Week this year. 

 What part of Fiji are you from? 

I’m from Savusavu, a little town on the second largest island of Fiji, also known as the Hidden Paradise 
 

  1. What do you and your family do to keep your culture alive?  

We love to cook and then eat together. 
 

  1. Do you have a favourite proverb or saying in Fijian?  
    Sega Na Leqa which means "no worries" 

 

  1. A favourite Fijian song you could share?  
    O Savusavu O Savusavu (Laisa Vulakoro) which is a song about my hometown. 

 

  1. What is your favourite part about Fiji? The food? The tourism? Church/religion?  
    Food, culture and the weather 

 

  1. Do you have any tips for those who may be travelling to Fiji? Any must see things?  
    The Mud Pools in Nadi are a must! People must also try food cooked in the earth (known as Lovo) 

 

  1. What are some common things we see in FIji? - Kids playing rugby? Music always playing? Lots of animals?  
    The BIG BULA SMILE! Also kids and Adults playing rugby. 

 

  1. How important is family to you?  
    Very important – Fijian are known to have close knit families. 

 

  1. What's one word that describes you in Fijian and what does it mean?  
    LOLOMA means kind and caring.
