Celebrating the international day of Mātua
Members of the Etu Pasifika Canterbury (EPC) Mātua programme participated in the recent Pasifika Mātua Olympics, a day where elders in the Christchurch community were able to get active in a fun and engaging way. The event is fitting as globally, elders are being celebrated today as part of International Day of Older Persons.

For Pasifika, the observance of this celebration underscores the pivotal role played by Mātua within our families, deeply rooted in our cultural heritage. Mātua are cherished and valuable members within Pacific households and communities.

EPC hosts a weekly Mātua group, providing a space for Pasifika elders in the community to stay connected. Reflecting on the importance of caring for our elders, Lead for EPC's Mātua programme, Ailua Makalio, shares the importance of the group.

The purpose of this group is to build on relationships with our mātua which are based on trust, care, and respect. It's also to provide opportunities for our mātua to come together and share their talents and culture but most importantly to have fun.”

Members of the Mātua programme participated in the Pasifika Mātua Olympics, which took place at Christchurch's Haeata Community Campus. The event featured various sporting activities specifically designed to ensure a safe and suitable level of participation for the Mātua members.

“It was so great to see mātua from all over Christchurch come together and participate in an event that encourages them to keep healthy and active. It was also good to see lots of different providers come together to host and support our elders."

Within Pasifika families, elders serve as the cornerstone, providing support, nurturing, and preserving culture and language.

While each Pacific community possess their own unique cultural traditions, there is a deep respect for elders, placing them in a position of great honour.

"Family traditions regarding the treatment of our mātua are prevalent across various Pacific cultures. We consistently prioritise their well-being by offering them the best of what we have. They are served first, provided with seating precedence at community events, entrusted with leading family meetings, family prayers, and much more."

Makalio encourages people to get their mātua involved in EPC's weekly programme.

“You can connect your mātua with us by contacting the clinic. We also receive referrals from other agencies or the community. Once we receive the names, our team calls them and we introduce ourselves. We then explain the purpose of the group and what we actually do when we come together.

"We emphasise that it is not compulsory, if they ever want to have a break from the group then they can, just give us a call or a text."

For Makalio and the team that care for our mātua, they feel privileged being able to serve and provide a space for our Pacific elders to connect and thrive.

“To provide care for the people who once cared for us is one of life's greatest honours.”
