Burnside High School awarded with Commitment to Well-being award
The Canterbury Pacific Youth awards 2024 hosted by The Specifically Pacific Collective (SPACPAC) recently took place, with Etu Pasifika Canterbury (EPC) having sponsored one of the awards – Commitment to Well-being. This specific award recognises individuals or groups that contribute significantly to the health and wellbeing of students and was awarded to Burnside High School, the most populated school in Christchurch.

Associate Principal for Burnside High School, Darryn Findlay, says wellbeing is a crucial part of a student's success.

“We look at well-being as a whole here at Burnside High School. For us that means checking in and caring for their well-being in all aspects of their life such as school and education, church, their families and communities."

Findlay is proactive in ensuring that each Pacific student at Burnside High School is aware of what extra-curricular activities, services and support are available to them as a means of contributing to their success.

Services Manager for EPC, Tuilavoni Lama says the values of Burnside High School align with EPC and acknowledges the school for the way they prioritise the wellbeing of their student cohort.

“We are pleased that the commitment to well-being award was presented to a student body whose values align well with our own as a clinic and workplace, in the same ways in which we approach well-being," he reiterates.

Pacific students at Burnside High School are happy to be a part of the school community and feel a strong sense of support and belonging.

“I feel really connected to the other pacific students here at my school. I feel I’ve been given an opportunity to represent the school as a young pacific leader and that Burnside recognised that potential in me and supported my growth," says year 13 student, Tanielu Leo’o.

Year 13 student, Yash Naicker, who was also presented an award during the evening
(The Academic Excellence Award) says he loves being a part of the Pacific community at Burnside High School.

“I really enjoy our fānau sessions that we have every Friday straight after school. It’s important to acknowledge that as a community, there should be a sense of belonging. I really enjoy the time I get to connect with the other students."

Mr Findlay expresses that there are more opportunities for Pacific students of Burnside High School to grow in their leadership and success; he looks forward to seeing them continue unleashing their potential.

The team at EPC recognises Burnside High School for their work to promote wellbeing in school, and wish them the best for the rest of their academic year.
