Vaifale has been actively practicing BJJ for two years, training at Checkmat Gym in Christchurch. He expresses that BJJ has significantly enhanced both his physical and mental wellbeing.
“I initially signed up for the physical benefits. My cardio, strength, and balance have all improved. I also feel more confident in self-defense thanks to my BJJ training."
“I’ve also seen substantial improvements in my mental wellbeing. I used to think I had strong resilience through sports, but BJJ has made me reassess that belief."
Vaifale notes that his mindset has positively transformed throughout his BJJ practice.
“I found myself struggling to win sparring sessions in class. I realised that my mindset was focused on 'winning at all costs,' and if I didn’t win, I felt discouraged.
"Now, I approach each class with the intention of learning and improving myself, rather than just winning. Attending morning classes has become a great way to start my day positively."
He highlights that BJJ is not just a physical activity, but also one that involves problem-solving and mental clarity.
“There’s a lot of problem-solving in BJJ. For example, if you find yourself in a particular position, there are ways to escape or reverse it. It’s like a chess match, although sometimes I feel like I’m playing checkers against higher-ranked classmates."
Vaifale also mentions that BJJ is inclusive and offers a space for talanoa, while providing significant health benefits.
If you’re in Christchurch, Checkmat offers a week’s free trial and is located at 289 Colombo Street, Sydenham.
“Greg and the team offer high-level classes, including kids' classes for ages 5-7, teen classes, and women-only classes every Saturday. Classes run from Monday to Saturday.”
