Men's Health Week 2023: John Kiria
John Kiria (JK) is a dedicated cultural support worker at Etu Pasifika Auckland. JK believes that talking about men's heath empowers men to become active contributors to their communities. His passion for Cook Island drumming and dancing has established him as a prominent figure within the Cook Island community.

This week is Men’s Health Week – why do you think it’s important to talk about men’s health?

Addressing men's health is important because men experience unique health challenges that require attention and care. For example, men are more likely to experience certain health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and heart disease. Societal norms and expectations related to masculinity often make men reluctant to seek medical assistance. By engaging in open discussions about men's health, we can help breakdown these barriers and encourage men to seek care and support they need. This can lead to earlier detection and treatment of health issues.

Why is health and well-being important to you?

There are many reasons including good health which allows us to live our lives to the fullest, pursing our goals and aspirations and enjoying time with loved ones. It also enables us to be productive and engaged members of our communities, contributing to the world in meaning full ways.

What’s one wellness tip or piece of advice you can share to encourage others this week?

Prioritize self-care. It's important to take time for yourself and engage in activities that promote your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. This may involve engaging in exercise, spending quality time with loved ones, and pursuing hobbies and interests. I firmly believe that by placing importance on self-care, you won't only feel better in the moment, but you will be able to handle the challenges and pressures of everyday life.
