Briefly tell us a little about yourself: island/villages you come from, your current role, family.
My name is Fakaanga Mapa and I am Tongan from a village of Nukunuku, Tongatapu. I was born and raised in Glen Innes, Auckland. I spent all my high school years in Tonga. I work as a Registered Nurse Prescriber and running the Diabetes Clinic. I am married to a Cook Islander/ Tahitian with six children and currently living in Panmure.
What/who inspired you to take up nursing?
My mum has been my main motivator, she was unwell at the time, and I was finding ways to help her. Mum passed away at the age of 46 years old. The feeling and experience of losing a loved one at a young age has made me want to help other people, so they do not have to go through what I went through.
What is the best thing about being a nurse?
Getting to meet other people, providing help, and attending to their needs. The rewarding feeling of helping our Pacific people and making a change and their journey to a positive outcome.
How does your language/culture help you in your profession?
Language plays a major role in my profession. Breaking down language barriers, relating well with our Pacific and their family.
What words of encouragement do you have for anyone who is wanting to become a nurse?
Give it a go. Have fun and always remember the reason you wanted to become a Nurse.
