Briefly tell us a little about yourself: island/villages you come from, your current role, family. 

Talofa Lava, my name is Marylynn and I am 29 years of age. I was born in the beautiful country of Samoa and my villages are Falelatai and Auala. I was raised in Siusega, Apia for most of my childhood life and where our family home is. I am happily married and have a one-year-old son, Noah who is our absolute world. 

What/who inspired you to take up nursing?  

My family have always been my inspiration for wanting to become a nurse. My late grandfather (a man so very special to me) was very unwell during my younger days and I remember wishing then that I was a nurse or doctor to take away the pain his health condition caused. He was a very strong-minded man and encouraged the importance of education for a better future. I also come from a family who are in the medical field as nurse practitioners and hearing their stories about service and helping people motivated me to also pursue a career in nursing. 

 What is the best thing about being a nurse? 

I would say meeting people from all walks of life and the opportunity to contribute towards positive changes in their lives whether it be small or big. 

 How does your language/culture help you in your profession?  

My culture has been a big part of my nursing career. Accessing healthcare and understanding health terminologies can be overwhelming for our Pasifika people, especially where language is a barrier. Being able to speak my native language has helped me to engage and build better rapport with patients daily. 

 What words of encouragement do you have for anyone who wants to become a nurse? 

Nursing is a rewarding career because of the people you will meet and help along the way. Find your passion and keep going!
